Just my type.

Yesterday I went to visit the Typographica exhibition at the Kemistry Gallery in Shoreditch. The retrospective, curated by Rick Poynor and part of the London Design Festival showases spreads from issues of the Graphic Design journal, created by Herbert Spencer from 1948 to 1967.

It’s incredible to think that a lot of this work is still cutting edge now, let alone in 1949 when Spencer was only 25 years old, working as a freelance Typographer. Also featured is work from Robert Brownjohn and Alexander Rodchenko.

The exhibition is well worth a visit if you’re in the area. I particularly liked the feature on signage designs on a typical journey from London to Heathrow airport (or London Airport as it was called at the time). There’s also some great prints for sale if you have a spare £100- including a fantastic one one of various UK newspaper ‘Late night final’ seals.

The exhibition, at 43 Charlotte Road runs until October 31st and is free to enter. See more of the photos I took on my Flickr page here.
